Glossary: lists and qualification

What is BANT in sales qualification?

BANT is a checklist for qualifying a sales lead. The letters stand for budget, authority, need and timeline: whether the buyer can pay, whether they can decide, whether they have a problem you solve and when they want it solved.

BANT asks four questions about a lead.

Each of the four letters of BANT is one question. A lead does not need a perfect answer to all four, and the answers tell you what the next conversation must cover.

1

Budget asks whether money is available.

Can they pay for it? The lead may have a set budget, or may be able to find one if the problem is costly enough. Either answer is useful.

2

Authority asks who decides.

Can they decide? Find out whether this person signs, recommends or only researches, and who else must agree.

3

Need asks what problem they have.

Is there a problem to solve? A clear, costly problem is the strongest part of any deal. Without it, the other three letters do not matter.

4

Timeline asks when it matters.

When do they want it solved? A date, a renewal or an event gives the deal a deadline. No timeline usually means no urgency.

Here is BANT applied to two leads for an invented company.

Imagine Varrowby, an invented company that sells accounting software. Two leads reply to the same cold email. The first is a finance director who signs off spending, has trouble closing the books and has a renewal in 3 months. She has no budget line yet.

The second is an analyst who likes the product but has no budget, no say in buying, no problem named and no date in mind. The finance director passes 3 of 4 and is qualified, because budget can follow a strong need. The analyst passes 0 of 4 and stays on the follow-up list.

Use BANT as a guide for the first conversation.

BANT works as a set of things to learn, not as a script to read out.

  1. 1

    Lead with need.

Ask what prompted the reply. If there is no problem, the rest can wait.

  2. 2

    Find the deciders.

Learn how the company buys and who signs. Invite those people to the next call.

  3. 3

Set the date by asking what drives the timing.

A renewal date or a deadline tells you how fast to move.

  4. 4

Raise budget once the need is clear.

Share a price range and ask whether it is workable. A strong need often creates budget.

Teams make these mistakes with BANT.

BANT is read out like a form.

Four blunt questions in a row feel like an audit. Work the answers out through a normal conversation.

No budget ends the conversation.

Many buyers find money after they see the cost of the problem. Treat a missing budget as a question, not a verdict.

Authority is taken at face value.

People overstate their say. Ask how the last purchase like this was approved.

Questions

People ask these questions about BANT.

What does BANT stand for?

Budget, authority, need and timeline. Budget is whether they can pay, authority is whether they can decide, need is whether they have a problem you solve, and timeline is when they want it solved.

Is BANT still used in B2B sales?

Yes. It stays in use because it is short and easy to remember. Many teams now start with need instead of budget, and treat the four letters as things to learn over one or two calls.

What is the difference between BANT and MEDDIC?

BANT has four questions and suits a first qualifying call. MEDDIC is a longer checklist for complex deals: metrics, economic buyer, decision criteria, decision process, identify pain and champion. Teams often use BANT early and a longer checklist later.

Does a lead need to pass all four parts of BANT?

No. A lead with a strong need, the right person and a date is worth pursuing even without a set budget. A lead that fails on need is rarely worth pursuing, whatever the other three say.
