Glossary: lists and qualification
What is lead qualification in B2B sales?
Lead qualification is the process of deciding whether a lead is worth a salesperson's time. It checks whether the company fits, whether the person has a real need, whether they are able to buy and whether a next step is agreed.
The four checks in lead qualification
Fit
Does the company match the profile?
Need
Is there a problem to solve now?
Ability
Can this person buy?
Next step
Is a meeting agreed?
Lead qualification checks a lead in four ways.
Fit, need, ability and next step can each end the conversation early, which is the point. Time saved on a poor fit goes to a good one.
Fit asks whether this company could ever buy.
Does the company match the profile? Compare its industry, size and region with your ideal customer profile. A lead outside the profile rarely becomes a customer.
Need asks whether there is a problem now.
Is there a problem to solve now? A reply that names a problem, a deadline or a failing tool shows need. Polite interest with no problem behind it does not.
Ability and next step ask whether a deal can move.
Can this person buy, or bring in the person who can? Is a meeting agreed? A qualified lead leaves the conversation with a date.
Here is a month of replies qualified for an invented company.
Imagine Kestrelby, an invented company that sells contract software to law firms. In one month its cold email campaign gets 80 replies. 50 of them are out of office notes, wrong contacts or a plain no, and 30 showed interest.
Checking fit removes 8 firms that are too small, so 22 passed the fit check. Checking need and ability removes 10 more that have no project or no say. That leaves 12 leads who are qualified and booked for a call. Sales spends its week on 12 conversations, not on all replies.

Qualify every reply before it reaches a salesperson.
A simple, written test applied the same way to every lead beats judgment calls.
The four steps in order
- 1Write the test
- 2Check fit first
- 3Ask about need
- 4Book the call
- 1
Write the test down.
Agree with sales what a qualified lead is, in a few lines anyone could apply.
- 2
Check fit first.
Fit can be checked from data alone, so do it before a single question is asked.
- 3
Ask about need with one question.
A short reply asking what prompted their interest reveals whether there is a live problem.
- 4
Book the call straight away.
Offer a time while interest is fresh. A qualified lead with no meeting cools quickly.
Prymatica qualifies the replies to your campaign and books interested prospects onto your calendar. You take the meetings. See how Prymatica's cold email process works.
Teams make these mistakes with lead qualification.
Every reply is passed to sales.
Interest is not the same as fit. Unqualified meetings fill calendars and teach sales to distrust the source.
The bar is so high nothing passes.
Demanding a confirmed budget before a first call turns away buyers who have a problem and no budget line yet.
Qualification depends on who is asking.
Two people applying two standards produce numbers nobody can compare. One written test fixes that.

Questions
People ask these questions about lead qualification.
What makes a lead qualified?
A qualified lead works at a company that fits your profile, has a problem you solve, can decide or can involve the person who does, and has agreed a next step such as a call.
What is the difference between a lead and a qualified lead?
A lead is anyone who has shown some interest or been identified as a possible buyer. A qualified lead has been checked against a test for fit, need and ability to buy. Many leads never qualify.
What are common lead qualification frameworks?
BANT is the best known: budget, authority, need and timeline. Others add the decision process, the cost of the problem or a named champion. All of them are checklists for the same question, whether this deal can happen.
Who qualifies leads in outbound?
The person who handles replies: a sales development representative in-house, or the agency running the campaign. They check each reply and book the ones that pass onto a salesperson's calendar.
